NORDIC MUSIC LAB

Nordic Music Lab is the creative project of multi-instrumentalist Bengt Tarre, blending the rich sounds of jazz, pop and trip-hop with a distinctly Nordic melancholic touch. Known for his intricate musicianship, Tarre brings together an eclectic mix of acoustic and electronic instruments, using marimba, percussion, and other acoustic textures alongside electronic elements to create a unique sonic landscape.

With the release of the debut single “How Can It Be” Nordic Music Lab introduces a refreshing and introspective sound that captures the essence of Scandinavian music’s emotional depth. The track sets the tone for a journey that is as atmospheric as it is captivating, drawing listeners into a world where the rhythms of jazz meet the atmospheric qualities of trip-hop and the infectious hooks of pop.

The second single “Broken Chain” has a Nordic melancholic vibe. This song weaves together symphonic grandeur and minimalist moments, creating a truly unique listening experience.

The third single “A Boy With A Toy” draws inspiration from the atmospheric elegance of David Sylvian’s early solo work. With its understated arrangements, intimate vocals, and subtle textures, the song creates a soundscape that feels both fragile and timeless.

The EP “Retrospective” brings together four songs written during the 1980s and 1990s, each carrying a deep sense of melancholy and reflection. The songs capture fleeting moments of solitude, introspection, and the quiet weight of time. In “Out Again”, the lyrics question the path humanity is taking, reminding us of how easily we drift through life without pausing to consider the bigger picture. It is a contemplative journey through isolation, memory, and the unspoken emotions that shape our existence.

The project’s sound is marked by a rich, organic fusion of acoustic and electronic textures, weaving together melodies that feel both timeless and modern. Nordic Music Lab is the musical exploration of a creative mind unafraid to push boundaries and bring new layers to genres that have long been associated with introspection and depth.

Nordic Music Lab use Marimba in the main part of the compositions. The marimba is a percussion instrument belonging to the family of mallet instruments, often recognized for its rich, resonant tones and wide range of musical possibilities. It is essentially a wooden keyboard instrument, similar to a xylophone but with a broader, fuller sound.

Nordic Music Lab also use the instrument Thermin. The Therminis one of the most fascinating and unique musical instruments created. Invented in 1920 by Russian physicist Léon Theremin, it is known for producing eerie, ethereal sounds without any physical contact from the musician. Instead, the performer controls the pitch and volume of the sound by moving their hands in the air near two metal antennas. One antenna controls the pitch, while the other modulates the volume, allowing for subtle and expressive movements that create hauntingly beautiful melodies.

For the electronic textures the favorit instrument is the Moog One. Moog One has an analog signal path. It features three distinct analog oscillators per voice for a total of 48 oscillators. These oscillators can generate classic waveforms like sine, sawtooth, square, and triangle, but with added flexibility, including wave-shaping and extensive modulation options. The oscillators also have the ability to sync to one another, creating complex harmonic textures and rich, evolving sounds.
